Big ups to Serena Williams for winning the US Open this past weekend. She performed magnificently and the best part about it was seeing the pure joy in her eyes and on her smile as she jumped up and down for joy after the final point. It was back to the basics of pure sport, competition and the joy of accomplishment.
In this day and age of controversy, sterioids, gambling and the likes, between some of what I have seen when Tiger won his last match despite torn knee ligaments, this summer with some of the Olympics and this US Open Championship, the kid in me was satisfied with the genuine love of sport and competition.
I have to give it up to Serena. I really do. Remember when they were publicly saying that she didn’t have her mind on her sport and that she wasn’t inclined anymore?
Look how she has turned things around. Third title, gotta luv it.
Mos Def! Not to mention the thing about the Williams Sisters is that they DO have other interest and are not totally consumed by the sport. They can dominate and STILL have a life. Serena is #1 in the world again. How do ya like them apples…. aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Serena is my girl. I saw the last 5 minutes of the game. I yelled as she jumped.
I admire her and Venus. They are always criticized by someone. I am not a tennis fan but when I have watched them play the commenters seem to favor their opponents.
I still wonder why folks are tripping on her jumping up in joy. Hell, I would too. Always trying to find a negative.
Go Serena.
Shai,
Its cause they feel that she is showing up the White girl! It goes back to when Jack Johnson used to tower over white guys in the early 20th century when he was the first Black heavy weight champion. When Joe Louis boxed they told him straight UP if you knock the white man down – walk away. If Serena was to win and walk away they would say she didn’t care about the game – has no enthusiasm. She jumps for joy and she’s acting out. Can’t win! But we know the deal!
