And then there’s this…

Rudy Giuliani says that when he was mayor, he gauged the New York City budget by Wall Street bonuses.

Of all the dumb ass things to think or say for that matter, it seems that Rudy Guiliani thinks that fat cat bonuses for Wall Street executives is a good thing that keeps jobs for New Yorkers?

WHAT THE FUCK????!!!!!!!

Yep that’s what he said.  His argument is that with the bonuses will lead to more spending in restaurants and department stores.  So in other words if Mortimer is not spending his multi-million dollar bonus at the Waldorf Astoria and Barney’s… those companies will be forced to lay off employees!

You know – I just wonder how stupid folk have to be to let certain things come out of their mouths.  And to think this dude ran for president.

Blago on Blow? I think so!

Gov. Rod Blagojevich says he considered selecting Oprah Winfrey to fill Barack Obama's former Senate seat.

What in the H – E – double hockey sticks is up with this cat?  Has he flown over the cuckoo’s nest or what?

The Illinois governor has an impeachment trial going on.  And since he thinks it’s unfair he decided to leave the state for a host of interviews.  So far he’s laying out such gems such as he considered Oprah Winfrey for the senate seat he allegedly tried to sell.  I mean in one sense that makes sense considering she makes enough money to meet any price he may have asked – but SERIOUSLY!    Oprah?

Not to be outdone by himself, he also compared himself to Mandela, MLK, and Gandhi.  WTF?

Man I think this dude is doing Shrooms, LSD or something!

He obviously does not live on this planet.  He lives in planet Blago.  A world only he understands.

I’m not sure what is more stupid – his words or the fact that some book publisher is considering whether to give Sara Palin an $11 million advance for a boring ass book about her life that she will in no way tell the truth about anyway.

The Evolution of Me and Francis Scott Key

It’s never been a mystery to me that we live in two different Americas.  One for black people and the other for white.  That didn’t stop with the passage of the civil rights bill of 1964.  Whether it’s the criminal justice system, the rate of poverty, educational inequities, political conflicts, etc., we still have not been a nation united across the board.

Starting in the late 80’s I made a decision that I would do something to show my displeasure.  In a subtle but defiant act, I decided that I would no longer stand for the Star Spangled Banner (aka The National Anthem) when it’s played publicly.  My thinking was that as long as my people are oppressed in this country, I would not stand along side, hand over heart giving reverence to their theme song.  If a game were on TV, I would turn the channel during the playing of the anthem.  Sometimes I would be at a sporting event, and if it was for instance a basketball tournament on Martin Luther King Day, they would play The Banner and James Weldon Johnson’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the so called Negro National Anthem.  (And a most beautiful and majestic song may I add.)  In that case I would stand for only the latter, and sit immediately afterwards.  It never bothered me in the least nor made me uncomfortable when I would get stares or dismissive mugs from others.  I figured what the heck.   I wasn’t disrespecting anyone else nor making any noise.  I simply sat silently and waited for it to pass.  This was my personal protest.  This was my Tommie Smith gesture and I offered it unapologetically.

I talked about how the election of Barack Obama to the presidency has inspired me to do more to contribute to my country.  A close friend and I had a conversation yesterday where we talked about how inspired we were to improve ourselves and our surroundings.  He said, “Every American, black, white, brown, whatever has a responsibility to better themselves and their community.   I don’t care if you take a class, get a GED or whatever.  You need to do something to step your game up!”  I totally agreed and told him of how I was inspired to blog about that very subject for a week.  I have always done things to better my world.  But I felt isolated still.  I felt my influence would only go so far as the world at large with it’s political machine both locally and nationally was against most of what I stood for.  My loyalty only extended so far to the country as a whole.  Because I saw how arrogant we were and how horribly we treat the poor, the sick, children, the elderly, and more recently the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  I always noticed the hypocrisy in which we talked one thing to other nations about democracy and yet stole elections right here at home.  So though I always acknowledged that America was a nation with great benefits, a nation where a lot is possible and in some cases more so than other parts of the planet, still I could not give her the free pass that many often do.  In other words, I always knew I was a patriot, but never a nationalist.

With the presidency of Barack Obama, I sense an elevation in my patriotism.  There is a difference in what I see in terms of possibilities.  The difference is now that I feel as if someone is actually on my team.   I don’t mean the team of the black man.  I mean the team of justice and righteousness.  The team of telling the truth and doing what one says.  I sense that my president is actually on the side of what is right and that I am included in the America that he envisions.  I feel as if my children’s futures are included as well.

In President Obama I see a man.  A family man who loves his wife and daughters whom I know he would protect to the death.  I see an admiration and respect in the eyes of his wife.  I see a man who sees the office of the presidency as a mission to help make things right and follow through on what he campaigned.  On the first day in office he freezes the salaries of his top aides who make over $100,000, saying that Americans are tightening their belts and so should Washington.  He puts limitations on their dealings with lobbyist.  He pens documents to close Gitmo within a year pending finding a place for some disgruntled so called enemy combatants.  I mean this cat is SERIOUS and I can feel the sense of urgency to not only set policy but to set the example.  I see a man of style and grace, of strength from within not flaunting it like a sword but indeed at least offering a hand first.  I see President Obama as not only being the President of the United States, but being MY president too.  And since he is my president, I am going to let him do his job, as I look to do mine.  I don’t expect him to change my life, only enhance my opportunities.  Changing my life is up to me.  To help change my community is up to me.

So in addition to all the things I have decided to do to help make my country better – I have included in that the symbolic gesture of once again standing for the Star Spangled Banner.

This is my investment of hope into mainstream America with its vanities and prejudices.  Don’t get me wrong.  I still know full and well that there are many haters out there for the cause of what is right.  There are still injustices happening everyday.  There is still a ton of work to do on the national and local levels of government and society and I will continue to fight vigorously against tyranny.  (I honestly think it’s silly to play the thing before every sporting event anyway.)  This is a tradition that was started in WWII.  Still I feel a sense of renewal and inclusion and as I embrace my president, I embrace the America that he is attempting to erect as again the greatest nation for possibilities in the world – more righteous than ever before.   Oh believe me, this symbolic gesture is a huge emotional investment for me just as it has been for the last 20 years on the opposite end.

“Or the land of the free? ”  Oh yea, I’m seeing that for me.

Lift Every Voice and Sing – indeed.

Bobby Rush, Please SHUT UP!

I was willing to let the new year slide on in on the sports tip…but NAW I can’t now cause of some foolish posturing of Rep. Bobby Rush (Il) over this “appointment” of Roland Burris by the embattled Illinois govenor.

Ya’ll know the basics:  Gov. Rod tried to sell the senate seat and was busted for it – wiretaps and all.  With most everyone on his ASS trying to get him to step the hell down, he defiantly throws Burris right in the faces of the citizens of Illinois and the nation.  Most definitely the governor learned a thing or two about arrogance from Bush and Cheney.

Because Burris is black and on the left right side of Rush’s politics, he wants the other Senators who don’t support the governor making the pick in the first place to accept this selection.

Now Rush is going all Malcolm Farrakhan and shit “warning” the other senators not to reject a black man.  He is comparing the other senators to Bull Connor and George Wallace if they don’t accept Burris, liking it to a lynching.  WTF?

Look, I know that there are no other African-American senators.  I know we need more of them.  However, it’s up to us to get them elected into office.  Period.  I think it’s good business sense to appoint an African-American to President Elect Obama’s seat.   Maybe Burris isn’t a bad dude.  The first African-American elected to state wide office, he’s lost every other major election he’s been in since.  Which means the majority of the people don’t want him.  Who knows, maybe he would do a good job and be a shining light to the people of Illinois.  From his lame ass posturing about how his appointment would “take a a major issue off the table” in assuring that Illinois has a full complement of senators in Washington, – Oh please spare me.  The truth is Burris has wanted to be senator for a long time.  The point is I don’t care if he is the Dahli fuckin Lama – he was appointed by a man facing corruption charges for selling the same seat.  If he was appointed after the governor stepped down by whatever means the state decided, that would be fine.  This shit here is whack though!  The president elect agrees that Burris’  appointment shouldn’t fly.  But Rush persist in using racial rhetoric to try to force this through.

I mean damn! Black folks have to be consistent.  And Rush is full of shit!  If Blagojevich would have appointed someone with the politics of Alan Keyes or Larry Elder, he would not be pontificating about constitutional fucking law.  He would be calling Al Shapton to march.  And it ain’t no secret that Rush and Obama have some political history back from 2000 when Obama lost to Rush for the same seat Rush is in now while Obama is on his way to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.  Can you say, “Hater in the house!”

Alan Keyes

Anyone who knows me knows that my politics are as black as a trillion midnights!  But Rush sounds like a damn fool!  And he and others who subcribe to letting this shit slide the way it’s being done for the sake of blackness needs to shut the fuck up!  You are flat our WRONG!

Political Game of Chicken? Gov. Rod still “acting like” the Gov, Names Replacement to Senate Seat

In the “up your nose with a rubber hose” move of the day.  Rod Blagojevich is naming himself a Senator by the name of Roland Burris, a former Illinois Attorney General.   After serving stints in the state as a state Comptroller prior to the AG’s position, Burris has done his thing on the political consulting tip with his firm, Burris & Lebeb Consulting, LLC.

What is the next move for the people of my home state?  Will they fight this appointment or what?  Is Gov. Rod offering him up as a trojan horse knowing he won’t get to hold the seat?  And did they have to meet in a park somewhere to agree on what the payoff would be?

That’s what I really want to know!

Rwandan Genocide Mastermind Gets Life

Like a lot of you I saw Hotel Rwanda.  I also had the pleasure of meeting the main character Paul Rusesabagina a few years ago.  When I read his book earlier this year, “An Ordinary Man,” it prompted me to read other books about the Rwandan genocide.   Though each of them viewed the tragedy from different angles, including one from the killers themselves, none proved favorable to Col. Theoneste Bagosora.  Though its been more than a dozen years, one of the masterminds of the genocide has been sentenced to life in prison.

Preach Preacher! Obama Chooses Right “Man of God”

Obama's inaugural choice ignites outrage

I hear liberals are in an outrage that President elect Obama chose Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the inauguration next month.  Supposedly the most vocal resistance is coming from the gay rights movement.  On the heels of the gay marriage ban in California as well as a few other states, they aren’t too keen on the idea of an evangelical Christian praying the president into office.

I have a message for my gay and lesbian brothers and sisters on this one.  “Stand down and pick another battle!”  Its is silly and short-sighted to raise hell over this one.  For one, Rick Warren isn’t being appointed to any office here.  He is a minister and author.  He is not going to set forth any policies that affect the gay and lesbian communities.  If you do some research on him, you will find that he is one of the most forthright, honest and fair ministers in the country.  Warren is no James Dobson or Pat Robertson.  Billy Graham, (the traditional presidential preacher)  walked away after the election became official cause he didn’t want to deal with a black man.  Warren was the only minister who could pull off a presidential form the way he did.  He allowed each man to speak on his faith and not offer an opinion on who he thought was “morally right.”

Does Warren believe in gay marriage?  No.  But everyone who does not agree with you is NOT necessarily your enemy.  Faith as well as the precepts that support that faith are a personal issue and he has a right to his beliefs as you do yours.  Again if you read his works and listen to his messages, you won’t find a person preaching today who is less judgmental than Mr. Warren.  He’s been on the forefront of using his influence for AIDS prevention and awareness, holding an AIDS Summit at his church, with none of the slandering or gay blaming of other ministers.  Who was speaking against Warren as he reached out to Obama for support of that program?  People like Dobson and Robertson who are notoriously anti gay.  Additionally, he is a guy who will listen and dialogue with the gay community.  If one is willing to listen, you never know what could come of it.

I did a post on Rick Warren earlier this year when he was on Meet The Press with Tim Russert.   In the midst of evangelical leaders vying for position to bring more of the divide and hate tactics to the campaign, Warren’s words were so bright and encouraging, I could see the glow in Russert’s face to have a minister of the gospel speak with such love and perspective.  As a man who grew up in the church, loving its virtues and hating its hypocritical and judgmental ways, I felt good about Warren’s message, and even more so his presentation.  This guy has it together.  Of course you should fight on for what you believe in.  However, Warren is the wrong target!

**As an added feature, I am posting the participants of proceedings on January 20th.  You will also notice that Rev. Joseph Lowery (a pro gay rights minister) is also speaking and giving the benidiction.  Obama said this morning that the fact that Lowery and Warren do have some differences of opinions reflect why he chose them both as a reflection of our nation.  Thats a good thing.  What do you think would have happened with a McCain administration?

Not Teflon Rod, or The Govenor with No Clothes

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich

Memo to Blagoyo-bribe – Look in that mirror!  Your approval ratings are in the single digits, nobody wants you to be govenor any longer and sure maybe no money had been exchanged for the Senate seat you tried to clutch with your bloody holves – but you are in a dream world if you think you can just maintain showing up for work everday like ain’t shit happened.  As long as they have been after you,  I can only imagine the corruption you got away with!  I am sure there are many more as well but they haven’t been busted yet.  YOU HAVE!

So get a grip!  WALK.  Cut a deal with the Feds – MOVE ON!  Your name is NOT Teflon Rod.  Forgetaboutit!

Power Corrupts, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely

Illinois governor taken into custody

“Your in a heap of trouble boy.”  – Jackie Gleason as the sheriff in Smokey and the Bandit.

The Feds have been after this dude for a while.  They finally put their case together in arresting the two term govenor Rod Blagojevich for“conspiring to get financial benifits through his authority to appoint a U.S.  senator to fill the vancancy left by Barack Obama’s election to president. ”

Complete with a 76 page FBI affidavit and court approved wire taps, ole Rod is going to look for a Cochran like attorney to explain his trying to get the hook up for himself and his wife via campaign contributions, a salary through a foundation.  Basically the senator’s position was “up for sale.”

The Feds did an Ice-T style  “Six In The Morning”  raid at his crib to scoop him up.

So much for public servant-hood.  This isn’t going to be pretty.  Greed can be a mother for ya!  Arrogance is even worse.

The Feds sho nuff got their geechie now!
